Game Industry Commercial Intelligence: Where studios are building & spending.
Welcome to Issue #5 of Studio State.
31st Union is defining who will decide which work goes outside the studio and how partners will be selected. That creates a more specific commercial picture than its earlier production roles.
Elsewhere, project descriptions reveal additional development activity, while confirmed studio closures require a reassessment of previously active accounts.
Lead Analysis - 31st Union
The Signal
Studio State observed a Senior External Development Manager opening on October 22. The position is described as the first dedicated role in a function without an existing external-development team.
Its responsibilities include partner selection and commercial negotiations. The manager will also help determine which work remains internal and which partnership models fit work assigned externally.
Our Read
31st Union already had external-development activity. A Lead Producer role observed in September included helping define external-development strategies for content disciplines. Other September evidence described external art vendors.
The October opening advances that picture by establishing dedicated ownership. It suggests the studio wants a repeatable way to make sourcing decisions and manage delivery across partners.
Our earlier coverage focused on launch infrastructure. This development adds a different dimension to the account, identifying how external production decisions are intended to be made. It doesn't establish that outsourcing expenditure has increased.
The Commercial Significance
Art-production companies and co-development providers now have a clearer function to investigate. The role connects supplier evaluation with the studio’s production requirements, rather than leaving the commercial relationship implicit.
For prospective partners, the useful question is which work packages the studio decides are suitable for external delivery. A provider’s ability to meet the studio’s quality and integration requirements may matter as much as available capacity.
This is evidence of an intended sourcing function. The vacancy doesn't establish that an RFP is open, that a new partner has been selected, or that the manager has joined. Vendors should qualify timing and scope before treating the account as an active opportunity.
What We’re Watching
An appointment, a defined partner requirement, or a named engagement would make the commercial picture more concrete. We'll also watch whether responsibilities remain with one leader or develop into a larger external-development team.
Company Developments
Meaningful changes in a studio’s projects, capabilities, or direction, with context on what changed and why it matters.
Velan Studios - Another Project Comes Into View
A Combat Designer opening observed on October 23 describes a new third-person shooter concept entering pre-production. The work includes early combat and traversal decisions.
Velan’s fantasy ARPG work was already visible in September and remains reflected in a separate combat-design position. The shooter description therefore adds to the known development picture.
These roles identify different design requirements, but they don't establish release dates or project budgets. Earlier external-developer references also aren't enough to connect a supplier opportunity to either project. The next useful evidence would clarify production commitments and how outside teams participate.
Where Opportunity Is Forming
Company developments that point to a specific need outside providers could address, with evidence of the opportunity and what remains unconfirmed.
Kwalee - A Defined Advertising Partner Interface
Kwalee’s Lead Ad Monetisation Manager position, observed on October 21, assigns responsibility for advertising revenue across its portfolio. It also includes managing ad-network and mediation relationships and introducing additional demand when the economics justify it.
Earlier observations established acquisition and analytics capabilities. This role adds a clearer view of the function responsible for advertising partners.
For ad networks and mediation providers, the relevant commercial case is measurable revenue improvement while protecting retention. The posting establishes partner-management responsibility and a conditional interest in additional demand. It doesn't identify a platform replacement or an open procurement process.
Contraction / Restructuring
Closures, workforce reductions, and organizational changes that affect how studios operate and what they can deliver.
BioWare - Closure Supersedes Development Signals
BioWare announced on October 21 that the studio is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.
That changes the account assessment decisively. Earlier hiring evidence supported continued development, but it can no longer justify assumptions about future project demand.
For service providers, the immediate task is to reassess any opportunity tied to that project and confirm the status of existing relationships. The announcement doesn't establish that cancelled work will move to external studios.
Liquid Swords - Bankruptcy and Administration
Liquid Swords entered bankruptcy on October 12, according to administrator Cirio’s notice. Studio State captured additional reporting during the October 19–25 review period.
Founder Christofer Sundberg subsequently confirmed the studio’s closure. He said discussions about continued support for Samson were underway, with nothing ready to announce.
The distinction matters for vendors. A released game may retain support needs while responsibility for funding and delivery remains unresolved. The administrator’s stated October 21 bidding deadline has passed, so the sale notice shouldn't be treated as a current invitation without further confirmation.
